Message from SSHRC
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Karine Duhamel will be joining SSHRC as Director, Indigenous Strategy, effective September 19, 2022. Karine will play a vital role at SSHRC and with our tri-agency colleagues to advance the building of new models for Indigenous research and training through the implementation of the Strengthening Indigenous Research Capacity strategic plan.
Of Anishinaabe and M矇tis heritage, Karine is an experienced leader, curator, educator, researcher and consultant specializing in First Nations, M矇tis and Inuit histories and politics.
Since 2020, she has worked at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, most recently as Manager and Advisor responsible for implementing and reporting on the Federal Pathway to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People. To this work, she brought her passion and experience as Director of Research for the historic National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, where her duties included drafting the Final Report as well as managing the Forensic Document Review Project and Legacy Archive. She has also previously served as Manager, Public Programs and Curator for Indigenous Rights at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, based in Winnipeg, where her work focused on co-developing new approaches to storytelling in the museum space with Indigenous partners.
A recognized educator at the elementary and university level, she is a former elementary school teacher and university Adjunct Professor, who has developed courses on Indigenous-state relationships, on the history of residential schools, Treaty relationships and on Indigenous rights movements in Canada and in the United States. She is an elected council member for the Canadian Historical Association, a speaker for the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba, and co-chair of the Expert Group on Indigenous Matters for the International Council on Archives.
Karine holds a Ph.D. and M.A., both in History, from the University of Manitoba, a Bachelor of Education (History and Mathematics) from Lakehead University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History and Political Science from Mount Allison University.
Please join me in welcoming Karine to SSHRC.
