Cyril Sherwood

Cy Sherwood commenced farming at Norton, New Brunswick in 1935 as the fifth generation Sherwood on a crown grant dating back to 1815. A man who recognized the importance of farm organizations, he was instrumental in organizing the New Brunswick Cream Producers Association, serving as its Vice-president and President.

Over the years Senator Sherwood has served as President of the Saint John Area Milk Producers Association; President, New Brunswick Milk Producers Association; Director, Maritime Winter Fair Association; Director, Maritime Federation of Agriculture;. Director, Canadian Federation of Agriculture; and Director, Dairy Farmers of Canada.

He helped to establish the New Brunswick Branch of the Holstein-Friesian Association and eventually became the N. B. Director of the Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada and its President in 1957.

In 1952 Senator Sherwood was named Minister of Agriculture for New Brunswick. As the Minister he assisted in the developing of effective marketing programs to cover many agricultural commodities produced in the province, including woodlot products.

He authorized and supported the amalgamation of the Provincial Livestock Show previously held at Douglas Field with the Fredericton Exhibition, which is now one of the leading events of its kind in Eastern Canada.

It was during his term of office that the McCain Frozen Food enterprises were established in New Brunswick, as was the internationally recognized egg and poultry test station in Millville.

In October 1979 he was summoned to the Senate of Canada. He became Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Chairman of the subcommittee on matters pertaining to the development of Kent County, N.B. He was instrumental in getting the Senate Committee on Agriculture to undertake hearings pertaining to soil degradation. In 1984 the report was published, "Soil at Risk".

Cy married Madelene Lunn on September 12, 1939. They have five children.
