Please welcome Dr. Svetlana Yurgel to the Department of Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Svetlana Yurgel received her Master's degree in biophysics from St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia and her Ph.D. degree in Microbiology form National Research Institute for Agricultural Microbiology, St. Petersburg, Russia.

She performed her postdoctoral training in the Institute of Biological Chemistry at Washington State University, Pullman. In 2003 she became an assistant research professor in the same institute.

In 2015 she moved her research program to AV¾ãÀÖ²¿, Agricultural Campus. Her research is focused on the bacteria plant interaction, specifically on rhizobium-legume symbiosis. She is studying the control of nutrient exchange between plant and bacteria and the mechanism of beneficial effect of symbiosis on overall plan health (plant growth promotion) and stress resistance.

She is also interested in the understanding of the role of soil microbial community in soil fertility and plant fitness.
