2016 Staff Award for Service

Posted by Stephanie Rogers on May 9, 2016 in News

The inaugural Staff Award for Excellence in Service was presented to Darwin Car at a reception in the MacRae Library on Friday, May 6th.

This award is intended to recognize staff members who have made an exceptional contribution to supporting the Faculty of Agriculture. Darwin has been making such contributions for more than two decades. He has played a key role in creating and maintaining high quality botanical gardens throughout our campus, including the Rock Garden, Herb Garden, Alumni Garden, John Higgins Garden, Butterfly Garden and the arboretum. He has created a living work of art that not only enhances the campus for students, staff and faculty, it also draws in the community to see what we have to offer.

“Darwin is a high spirited individual with significant energy and innovative idea," explained Dr. Raj Lada, Department Chair Environmental Sciences.  "His ability to nurture and care for plants and well as people helps to keep our community happy and healthy"

Darwin is a consummate professional who shares his expertise readily with others, both on and off campus. He has been the direct supervisor of our other horticultural staff members and he has had a positive role in their professional development. Permanent and summer staff are known for their dedication, hard physical work and their on-going commitment, thanks to Darwin’s tutelage and mentorship. He has spearheaded the volunteer Horticulturist movement and leads the Friends of the Garden initiative. Darwin actively trains the volunteer Friends in horticulture serving the community at large and promoting horticultural values.

Darwin also contributes to the teaching program at the Faculty of Agriculture, assisting with labs to share his knowledge with the next generation of horticulturalists. He also serves as a wonderful role model, demonstrating an admirable work ethic by completing his degree while working full time. And through it all he maintains a positive and cheerful attitude.

Above all, Darwin is known for his enthusiasm, passion, commitment and willingness to help regardless of weather or other competing demands. If someone needs his assistance or advice, he finds the time to provide it. Not only does Darwin nurture and care for the plants on campus, he is always willing to go above and beyond to keep the campus community happy and healthy.

Congratulations Darwin!
