Call for Proposals

Posted by stephanie Rogers on December 20, 2022 in News

The 25th annual AV整氈窒 Conference on University Teaching and Learning (DCUTL) aims to promote the importance of university teaching and learning among faculty, staff, and graduate students. It is both a showcase for current research and practices and an opportunity to foster new ideas and projects. The 2023 conference will take place May 3 and 4 and the theme is:

Mawitamk (Being Together): How can the the 5Rs of Indigenous Education Respect, Responsibility, Relevance, Reciprocity, Relationships, Help Us to Imagine, Build, Nourish, and Sustain Teaching and Learning Communities

Respect, responsibility, relevance, and reciprocity, introduced by Kirkness and Barnhardt (2001), describe principles of Indigenous education that can guide and be applied to, Indigenization and Indigenous-student support efforts within post-secondary institutions. The fifth R, relationships, was later adopted to form the Five Rs of Indigenous education (Restoule et al. 2018)

While constructed to support Indigenous learners, the 5 Rs can be applied within multiple teaching and learning contexts including (but not limited to) student-centred learning, culturally relevant pedagogies, internationalization, and online pedagogies. The 5 Rs, when applied to all learning spaces, course design, structure, and delivery, create learning opportunities that support individual growth and emphasize all students holistic well-being. This furthers the goal of truly Indigenizing and decolonizing our institutions.
