Original story shared in the .

Back in 2008, Dr. Shepherd prioritized his focus into three main challenges he felt the Faculty of Computer Science had been facing at that time: falling enrolment numbers, problematically low retention rates, and a shortfall in capitalizing on research talent. All three challenges were fixable but would take some work, creativity and a lot of help.

Enrolment numbers

Falling enrolment numbers meant a shrinking student body and a serious budgetary problem. Enrolment has increased by 85% from 2008 to 2014 and the Faculty has benefited from a budget surplus for the past five years.

In part, the increase in enrolment numbers over recent years came from national trends of overall rising computer science enrolment, but the Faculty itself played a major role in increasing attendance. Dr. Shepherd enhanced the Outreach Committee, a committee comprised of faculty and staff members focusing on recruitment into Computer Science at AV整氈窒. Through this initiative, he actively promoted programs like the annual Computer Science Day, programming competitions, and participation in university-wide initiatives such as Open House. Dr. Shepherd always recognized the importance of connecting directly with high school students, parents, and teachers and even through a busy dean schedule visited many schools in Nova Scotia and Ontario to talk with students about the opportunities that exist in studying computer science or informatics at AV整氈窒.

Student retention

Low retention figures for students created another budgetary concern. The Faculty of Computer Science was having trouble keeping first-year students in the program.

The Faculty worked hard to review the issues and completely revamped the first two years of the undergraduate program. Required labs and tutorials wereadded to all core first and second yearcourses, which created a seamless pathfrom year to year for students. Retentionlevels rose from 56% in 2008 to 82% in2014. Dr. Shepherd credits a lot of thissuccess to the efforts and contributionsfrom the faculty and staff who were allwilling to go the extra mile to make theimprovement especially those whoheld the associate dean academic positionduring those years.

Capitalizing on research talents

The Faculty of Computer Science hasalways been fortunate in being full inresearch talent, but it was not properlycapitalizing on this talent.

To address this concern, a newassociate dean research position wascreated to focus on supporting researchwithin the Faculty. Evangelos Milios tookon this role in 2008 and was asked todouble the amount of research contractsand grants from $1.5 million ayear. Now with more than $3 million inresearch funding (grants and contracts) Dr. Milios dedication and hard workenabled him to surpass this target.

His philosophy

Dr. Shepherd's philosophy as dean hasbeen to create an environment in whicheveryone can be successful: students, staff and faculty.

The community within the Facultyof Computer Science flourished in thisframework. The Faculty is now consideredone of AV整氈窒s success storiesby senior university administration.

Although there have been successesover these last seven and a half years,it hasnt always been the easiest pathto be on. Dr. Shepherds own researchand teaching had to be put completelyon hold. The deans position is a 24/7job without departments or departmentheads to aid with human resources, studentissues and outreach activities.I felt that I had reached a pointin my career where I wanted to givesomething back in a different way,Dr. Shepherd says. So this was a step Iwas willing to take in order to help theFaculty and the University.

Whats next?

After July 1, Dr. Shepherd will immediatelytake an administrative leave, butwill find his old office once again on thethird floor of the Goldberg Computer ScienceBuilding. In October, he is chairingthe Big Data for Productivity Congressat the World Trade Centre which willbring business, government and academiatogether to explore, debate andunderstand the impacts of big data onproductivity in the world.

Hed like to get involved with some ofthe newer Faculty projects such as thenew ICT sandbox ShiftKey Labs andthe Institute for Big Data Analytics. Heshoping to continue on with some of hisoutreach initiatives, specifically visitinghigh schools to talk with students andteachers.

When asked if he had any advicefor his successor, he replied: I learnedquickly that progress has to be achievedfrom the bottom up. It takes time andlots of important discussions to get aFaculty full of independent thinkers allrowing in the same direction.

I see a need to recruit more researchfaculty and to move the Faculty ofComputer Science up another level tobecome the very best of the mid-sizedcomputer science faculties/departmentsin Canada, he continues. The Faculty isdeveloping a transformational fundraisingcampaign that will make AV整氈窒 arecognized Centre of Excellence for BigData Analyticsin Canada.

The Faculty of Computer Scienceoffers its thanks to Dr. Shepherd for hisdedicated work as dean over the pastseven and half years.
