The scholarship was established by the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People in recognition of Dr. Ruck's contributions in the struggles of the Black People of Nova Scotia for equal access.
Calvin W. Ruck was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia in 1925. He had to leave school at age 16, after the death of his father, and was not able to resume his studies for 30 years. As a mature student he studied sociology, public relations, and social work. He earned a Diploma in Social Work from the AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ School of Social Work in 1979.
Dr. Ruck was active in the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People for many years, and served as a volunteer in almost every position in the organization. He served on the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the Advisory Board of the AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ School of Social Work and has been an active member of the Black Cultural Society.
In 1994 he received a honourary degree from AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ in recognition of his outstanding contributions to social work, to his community and to his country.
