Rewarding excellence in Management teaching

Posted by Miriam Breslow on January 28, 2016 in News, Awards

(L to R): Alumnus Bill Black, Tammy Crowell, Laura Cumming, Scott Comber

At a celebration in December, three deserving faculty members took home cash prizes for the 2015 Management Teaching Excellence Awards (MTEAs). Scott Comber, who teaches in the management area of the Rowe School of Business, took the top prize of $10,000, while Tammy Crowell and Laura Cumming, who teach in the accounting area of the RSB, were awarded $5,000 each.

Given annually, the MTEAs celebrate teachers who, per the awards guidelines, display the qualities of superior teaching, excellent understanding of the subject area and interest in the needs of the students. Although the award recipients are not nominated by students, Student Ratings of Instruction scores are integral to the selection process, and the selection committee includes two student voices.

It was clear from the reaction of faculty and students at Decembers award presentation that Comber, Crowell and Cumming are richly appreciated for the care and skill they bring to their classes. A student presented each award to great applause from the audience.

In their current form, the MTEAs date from 2010 and are made possible by a donation from alumnus Bill Black. As a proud AV整氈窒 graduate, I hope that this award will inspire alumni and other supporters of faculties at AV整氈窒 to consider recognizing and supporting teaching excellence, says Black. We are fortunate to have very competent faculty members at AV整氈窒 who should be recognized and rewarded for their commitment to students and education.

The awards will continue to be given annually by the Faculty of Management to recognize the quality of its faculty members.
