A petrological atudy ot the disputed 'porphyry' of the Bathurst-Newcastle area, New Brunswick, was undertaken. Particular attention was given to the favourable exposures at the 'A' pit at Heath Steele Mines.
The field evidence supported by petrological studies led to the conclusion that the 'Porphyry' at Heath Steele Mines was of sedimentary origin and classified as an arkose in agreement with the Geoloc]gical Survey of Canada. Two theoriws are advanced to account for source material of the rock. The arkose could be derived either from slightly older acid volcanics or from pre-existing Cambrian or Pre-cambrian rocks.
