The 23rd annual Subway Centennial Womens Basketball Tournament hits the court Friday, Oct. 19 at Dalplex. AV整氈窒 is hosting a great line-up of Atlantic University Sport conference teams as well as three teams visiting from across the country. Joining AV整氈窒 are St. Francis Xavier University, Saint Marys University, University of Calgary, University College of Fraser Valley and Wilfred Laurier University.
AV整氈窒 will play their first game of the tournament against the University College of Fraser Valley on Friday night. This event will also be dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. AV整氈窒 is one of 30 CIS womens basketball programs participating in this joint effort.
We selected this particular game to get involved because the Subway Tournament was founded in 1985 to help enhance the calibre of intercollegiate womens basketball in Nova Scotia on the 100th anniversary of the first female graduate of AV整氈窒. It also seemed fitting that we recognize this project during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, explains Tigers Head Coach, Dr. Carolyn Savoy.
During the game there will be awareness initiatives, educational materials and special promotions.
Nancy Margeson, Chief Executive Officer for the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) is excited to have this new opportunity to increase awareness of her organization and their purpose.
The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation appreciates this exceptional opportunity to raise funds for breast cancer and at the same time raise awareness about the disease in a new marketplace. CBCF encourages women and men to 'be breast aware' and practice a healthy lifestyle starting at an early age. What a great venue to deliver this message! Thank you!
The Tigers game against UCFV starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $20 for a tournament pass, $8 for a day pass or $5 for a double header pass.
