Congratulations to the AV俱乐部 Law School Jessup International Law Moot Team, comprised of Amy Anderson, Michael Fenrick, David Mollica, and Daniel Watt.聽These students faced teams from fourteen other Canadian law schools at the national competition in Saskatoon, where they argued a tough international law problem before panels of judges and lawyers from across the country.聽They placed second at the national round, as well as winning a raft of prizes for their written and oral work.聽This propelled them on to the International Round in Washington, D.C., where Amy Anderson was ranked聽ninth overall oralist (out of 400 competitors) and the team won fourth place for their written submissions.
Congratulations to Stanimir Bonev (Physics & Atmospheric Science) on receiving the 2008 Alvin Van Valkenburg Award.聽Dr. Bonev will receive his award at The Gordon Conference on Research at High Pressure in Maine in June/July.聽Traditionally, the attendees of this conference have honored a young scientist working in the area of high pressure or a scientist new to the field.聽
Congratulations to Dennis Bowie (Medicine) upon receiving the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada鈥檚 Prix d鈥檈xcellence for Atlantic Canada.聽This award of excellence recognizes Fellows of the Royal College who have made significant contributions as medical educators or provided outstanding service to their community and to the College.
Congratulations to H茅lene Deacon (Psychology) upon receiving the March of Dimes Basil O鈥機onnor Starter Scholar Research Award.聽This award will permit Dr. Deacon to extend her research on reading development to work with children who struggle to learn to read.聽The March of Dimes Foundation is dedicated to promoting healthy child development, with the specific intention of preventing impaired functioning in children.
Congratulations to biology student Anna Elliott聽 for receiving top prize for an oral presentation in the plant sciences from the Canadian Botanical Association.聽The topic of Ms. Elliott鈥檚 presentation was, 鈥渉alting programmed cell death in the lace plant using the calcium channel blocker ruthenium red.鈥
Congratulations to Jill Grant (Planning) upon being elected to the College of Fellows of the Canadian Institute of Planners.聽In his congratulatory letter to Dr. Grant, CIP President, Mr. Blake Hudema, MCIP, likened this distinction to 鈥渆ntering the hall of fame of Canadian Planners.鈥澛燞e goes on to acknowledge Dr. Grant鈥檚 鈥渆xemplary contribution to planning that deserves recognition on a national basis.鈥
Congratulations to Amanda Pelham (Editor, AV俱乐部 Magazine, Communications and Marketing) for winning the gold medal for the best university magazine in our category for the redesigned AV俱乐部 Magazine.聽The judges were unanimous in their praise for the new design as 鈥渇resh, fun and varied鈥 and applauded the magazine for taking risks that paid off.聽 The judges specifically mentioned 鈥渁n inspired piece from a new undergraduate鈥 鈥 this article, entitled First Impressions, was written by first-year science student聽Michael Akerman.
Congratulations to Ron Stewart (Medicine) upon being recognized as a 鈥淗ero of Emergency Medicine鈥 by The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).聽 The campaign, which is part of ACEP鈥檚 40th anniversary, recognizes emergency physicians who have made significant contributions to emergency medicine, their communities and their patients.
Congratulations to Jessica Wise (MBA/MHA student) upon being honoured with the 2008 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies.聽Six Atlantic Canadian university business students received the award with each recipient receiving a cheque for $10,000 from David F. Sobey who commented that he hoped the awards helped foster an entrepreneurial spirit and build a closer relationship between the business and academic communities.
Congratulations to David Gardner (Psychiatry/Pharmacology/Pharmacy), Stan Kutcher (Psychiatry), Pat McGrath (Psychiatry/Psychology/Pediatric Pain Research Lab), and Archie Kaiser (Law/Psychiatry) upon their appointment to the newly-created Mental Health Commission of Canada.聽 The commission has three main priorities: to create a national strategy on mental health issues; develop an anti-stigma campaign; and create a knowledge-exchange centre, which will provide a range of resources for mental-health consumers, families, health care professionals and the public.
Congratulations to AV俱乐部鈥檚 Bordenball team members Martine Allain, Jill Baugild, Amber Corkum, Alan Dalton and Kyle Lamb (Kinesiology students) for their first place finish and to AV俱乐部鈥檚 Ultimate Frisbee team members Matthew Conway, Jessica Dalton, Catherine Dawe, Lynn Dawson, Abby Jackob and Brittany Mcmurter (Kinesiology students) for their second place finish in the National Kinesiology Games held in March at AV俱乐部.聽More than聽600 students came to Halifax from across Canada to compete in these games.
