As AV整氈窒 enters exam season, most of the universitys varsity teams and sports clubs set down their gear and pick up their number two pencils. So where is a competition junkie going to get their fix this December?
Enter AV整氈窒 President Tom Traves. Dr. Traves is one of 10 Halifax community leaders taking part in the Salvation Armys Stocking Stuffer Scramble campaign, raising money to support the organizations winter relief efforts. His friendly competition includes businessmen Fred MacGillivray and Dennis Campbell, musicians Jill Barber and Terry Kelly, Olympic kayaker and Dal alum Karen Furneaux, andyesSaint Marys President Colin Dodds.
I agreed to take part in the campaign because I support all the work that the Salvation Army does to provide assistance to those most in need in our own backyard, explains Dr. Traves. I feel that this campaign is another great opportunity to show the competition the generosity of the AV整氈窒 community.
It would also be great fun to outdo SMUs donors, he adds.
The campaign allows individuals to donate money through the Salvation Armys website in care of the community leader of their choice. Last year, the campaign raised over $40,000 in cash to support the Armys programming during the winter months a time of year when food, shelter and other services the Army provides are at their highest demand.
Dr. Traves says that he hopes the friendly competition with SMU and the other community leaders spurs people to think about those that depend on such services, and to support others in the best way they see fit this holiday.
There are a lot of ways to be generous during the holidays, he says. I hope that everyone at AV整氈窒 takes some time this season to support good works in their community, whatever your way of giving.
