Controversial reading

- October 7, 2009 To Kill A Mockingbird from reading lists. What do you think? Are there other books that should be read instead?" />

Since its publication in 1960, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been controversial. It tells the story of racial injustice in the American South told from the point of view of a little white girl.

It seems someone somewhere is always calling for it to be banned or taken off reading lists. Such requests have been made in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Hamilton, Ont. The latest complaint comes from a parent at a Toronto high school who says there are more appropriate books to read.

What do you think? Have you read To Kill a Mockingbird? Should it be read and discussed among high school students or should it be dropped from reading lists? If you think it should be dropped, what other books should be read in its place?
