No balanced budget next year

- November 16, 2009

In a response to a report filed by his economic advisory council, Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter concedes it won't be possible to balance the budget next year because of the state of the province's books.

"I believe the advice from the panel on balancing the budget too soon is sound," Dexter said in a statement. "We have information now that no one had six months ago, and I recognize that we cannot balance the budget next year."

The panel made three recommendations including a two percentage point hike in the HST, targeted spending cuts and government measures to spur economic growth.

What do you think about the recommendations? And, what's your advice for the government: what should the NDP do to get Nova Scotia's finances back on track?
