At its meeting last month, the Board of Governors approved plans for a new fitness centre on South Street and improvements to Dalplex, with the cost to be recouped via a new student fee. Students would pay $90 per term for the fitness fix-ups, but only after the improvements are completed, sometime in 2014.
Dal News reporter Michelle Hampson asked what students think about planned improvements to Dal鈥檚 aging recreation facilities and the extra student fee.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 see a problem with it really. I think it鈥檚 a good thing because I鈥檓 a varsity student so anything that can help the Dalplex is good for me.鈥 鈥 Sarah Currie, 18, first-year Commerce | |||
| 鈥淚 think that it鈥檚 good that the fee is being held off until students can actually use it because it does not make much sense for students to pay the fee right now if they aren鈥檛 actually going to use the facility.鈥 鈥 Chris Haughn, 21,聽second-year Pharmacy | ||
| 鈥淭hat鈥檚 cool. I don鈥檛 mind a new Dalplex. I won鈥檛 be here for it, but...鈥 鈥 Shiva Kale, 20, third-year IDS and Neuroscience | ||
| 鈥淚 think they should just do that for free anyway. But I guess it sort of makes sense. We do need an upgrade, but I think we鈥檙e paying enough in tuition that we shouldn鈥檛 have to pay more for a fitness centre.鈥 鈥 Eric Negulic, 24, Masters Geology | ||
| 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think that鈥檚 a good thing. I think that鈥檚 just another way of taking money from us. I don鈥檛 think a lot of people can afford it, even though it鈥檚 90 dollars. It鈥檚 not a huge amount, but as a student, I think it鈥檚 just another burden.鈥 鈥Hind Noori, 23, Sociology | ||

| 鈥淚鈥檓 for it. I think that enough people use the gym, and Dalplex is in such terrible shape as it is, that I would be willing to pay $180 for a better gym.鈥 鈥 Jeff Himmelman, 23,聽first-year Medicine |
