A lucky few AV俱乐部 employees got to sneak out of the office for the morning of June 7, but trust us 鈥 they鈥檝e earned it.

Each year, Dal President Tom Traves hosts a morning coffee break at the President鈥檚 House for employees marking their 25th year at the university. For some perspective: a quarter-century ago, there was still a Soviet Union and a Berlin Wall. Brian Mulroney held the reins in Ottawa and Ronald Reagan was running things across the border. Dynasty (the first one) was on TV, Men Without Hats were on the radio, and most of AV俱乐部鈥檚 current undergrads hadn鈥檛 even been born yet. 聽

Dr. Traves didn鈥檛 mention Men Without Hats in his speech to the honored attendees, but he did laud his guests鈥 many contributions and their continuing legacy.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 really important to celebrate these kinds of milestones,鈥 he explained in an informal speech to the guests of honor. 鈥淭hings are very, very different today鈥 we鈥檙e larger, more complex, we have more faculties, more programs鈥 all of that鈥檚 possible only because we have people who make it happen.鈥

Before Dr. Traves distributed the cherished 25-year pins鈥攈e joked about feeling a bit like Santa Claus handing them out鈥攈e concluded, 鈥淲e鈥檙e only as good as the people who work here, and I think we鈥檙e very good indeed.鈥

Taking stock of careers well-spent

One 25-year veteran is June Cleary, administrative assistant to the assistant vice-president, Communications and Marketing.

鈥淚鈥檝e been coming to AV俱乐部 every day and really enjoying my time very much鈥 she says. Her 25-year pin just squeaked in before her retirement this month. And although Ms. Cleary will miss AV俱乐部, 鈥淚鈥檓 glad to be moving on to a more relaxing pace鈥 more dog walking!鈥

鈥淭hings have changed so much,鈥 she adds. 鈥淲hen I first came to Dal, we had just gotten computers in the office. Apple Twos, I think, those little boxy ones that people used to turn into fishtanks.鈥 Ms. Cleary says the highlight of her career was AV俱乐部鈥檚 involvement with the Halifax G7 visit in 1995: 鈥淚 had my picture taken with Bill Clinton behind the University Club.鈥

Karen Tarum, another 25-year recipient, is the library assistant at the Sir James Dunn Law Library. 鈥淚 work in the acquisitions department,鈥 she explains. 鈥淚 do 鈥 well, I do a lot of things!鈥

In 25 years, she鈥檚 seen the remodeling of the library and the arrival of new deans. 鈥淸Current Dean Kim Brooks] has really brought the law school together in a community,鈥 Ms. Tarum says. Her advice to the current crop of job-seekers is that 鈥渋f you work hard and respect other people, you鈥檒l get along great.鈥

Carolyn Young is the administrative and graduate assistant in the Department of Biology. For her, AV俱乐部 is something of a family tradition.

鈥淢y dad worked here鈥 he retired eight years ago,鈥 she says. The details of Ms. Young鈥檚 career have changed over the years: 鈥淓verything鈥檚 electronic now鈥 and we鈥檝e moved through a lot of [department] chairs.鈥

And after 25 years of getting to know AV俱乐部, what does she think of the school?

鈥淚t鈥檚 like a family away from your family.鈥
