Sarah Taplin, Track and Field

Third-year jumper Sarah Taplin is this week’s G2 Female Athlete of the Week.

Sarah won gold medals in the 60m hurdles and triple jump at the Subway AUS Championship this past weekend in Moncton.

She won gold in the triple jump, posting a leap of 11.96m, beating her own AUS and DAL records from last year of 11.71m. The jump ranks her sixth in the country and was the best single performance of any athlete at the championship.

In the 60 m hurdles, her final time of 9.15 gave her the gold medal and title of AUS record holder, breaking the record previously set in 1994 of 9.17.

Sarah is from Moncton, N.B. and is a kinesiology student.

Kashrell Lawrence, Basketball

Third-year forward Kashrell Lawrence is this week’s G2 Male Athlete of the Week.

Kashrell had an amazing weekend, averaging 22 points per game, leading the Tigers to their first AUS championship since 2010-11.

In Friday night’s quarter-final game, Kashrell had 17 points, including hitting a buzzer beater to defeat the Cape Breton Capers, 64-62.  He also had five rebounds in that game.

The next night, he had a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as the Tigers upset the number one ranked UNB Varsity Reds 85-74 in semifinal action, securing a spot in Sunday’s final.

In Saturday’s final against the Saint Mary’s Huskies, Kashrell had a monster game, scoring 31 points and grabbing 17 boards to lead the Tigers to an 88-78 overtime championship win over the Huskies. The championship player of the game, Kashrell was selected as a tournament all-star and MVP.

A native of Brampton, O.N., Kashrell is a commerce student.
