Women’s Basketball

The ladies were slated for two games this week and were unable to come away with a win against the Saint Mary’s Huskies or the Acadia Axewomen. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿, now 3-3, falls to fourth place in the AUS standings.

On Wednesday night, the Tigers travelled down South Street to the Homburg Centre to take on the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

After a promising 16-10 first quarter for the Tigers, Saint Mary’s took control of the game holding the Tigers to just two points in the second quarter. SMU was up 28-18 at half time.

Saint Mary’s did not let up in the third quarter putting up 24 points compared to the Tigers 10.  The Huskies went on to grab a 61-38 victory.

Tessa Stammberger was once again the Tigers best player on the floor but was held to only 13 points, a team high.

On Saturday it was a much closer affair as the ladies suffered a one-point loss to the undefeated Acadia Axewomen on the road. The young Tigers are continuing to exceed expectation this season and have shown they shouldn’t be taken lightly.

After trailing 39-28, the Tigers had a huge third quarter cutting the deficit to one point heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers managed to claim the lead in the late stages of the fourth quarter but could not outlast the Axewomen suffering a 67-66 loss.

It was none other than Tessa Stammberger leading the charge with 23 points.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿â€™s next action comes on the road when they take on the StFX X-Women next Saturday.

Men’s Basketball

After starting the season 4-0, the men’s basketball team has run into some trouble dropping both their contests this week to the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the Acadia Axemen. Despite the two losses, the Tigers still sit in a tie for second in the AUS standings.

On Wednesday night, the boys took on Halifax rivals, the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Homburg Centre. Saint Mary’s had a strong second half propelling them to a 77-58 win, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season.

The Tigers couldn’t seem to get it going offensively as Kashrell Lawrence was the only AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ player to reach double digits in scoring with 16 points.

On Saturday night in Wolfville, it was a much more competitive game as the Axemen and Tigers were neck-and-neck the whole match. Acadia managed to edge out the Tigers taking the contest 85-83.

After suffering their first loss of the season the Tigers came out strong posting a 21-16 first quarter. Acadia came back in the second quarter knotting things up at 42-42 heading into the break.

By the fourth quarter, the Axemen had opened up at 12-point lead and looked to be in control of the game. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ once again managed to comeback going on a 12-0 run in the late stages of the game to tie things up at 83 with six seconds remaining.

Shaquille Smith scored in the dying seconds on the fast break to give the Axemen the win.

Lawrence had another double-double with 25 points and 10 boards.

The Tigers will try to get back in the win column next Saturday when they take on the StFX X-Men in Antigonish.

Men’s Hockey

The men’s hockey team took the ice at the Halifax Forum twice this weekend, coming away with a win and a loss. The Tigers still sit in seventh place in the AUS but are closing in on the sixth place UPEI Panthers.

On Friday night, the Tigers hosted the Panthers in a crucial game for playoff positioning. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ came away with a 6-3 win and the all-important four-point swing in their favour.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ put on a power play clinic in the first period scoring three goals on the man advantage in just under two minutes.  The Panthers added two power play goals of their own while Tanner Williams netted an even strength goal to cap off a 4-2 first period.

Phil Gadoury completed a hat trick in the second period scoring two of his three goals in the frame while Guillaume Rioux-Legault scored for the Panthers.

The third period went scoreless giving the Tigers a 6-3 win.

Corbin Boes continued to be a wall in the Tigers net stopping 41 of the 44 shots he faced.

Saturday night the Tigers were in tough against one of the best teams in the nation, the UNB Varsity Reds.

After a scoreless first period the Varsity Reds scored five unanswered goals in the following 29 minutes.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ managed to spoil the shutout as Daniel Walsh scored a power play goal half way through the third period.  The Varsity Reds held onto the 5-1 victory and improved to 9-2-2 on the season.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball team was at Sherbrooke University this past weekend for the second AUS-RSEQ Interlock event of the season. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ managed to go 2-1 against RSEQ opponents over the course of the weekend.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ dropped the first set of the weekend to the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night but rallied back to take the following three sets wining the match 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-17).

Kristen O'Brien was the go-to offensive threat in the match, hammering away a game-high 16 kills.

On Saturday morning the Tigers suffered their only loss of the weekend to the Montreal Carabins who took the match 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-17)

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ grabbed the first set, but the Carabins offence proved to be too much as they out-hit the Tigers for the remainder of the game.

Adam Sandeson led the defensive effort with 21 digs.

In the second match of the day the Tigers got back in the win column, downing the host Sherbrooke 3-2 (25-21, 14-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10). The two sides traded sets back-and-forth until the Tigers were able to get the win taking the fifth set 15-10.

Kristen O'Brien was at it again with a game-high 18 kills.

Women’s Volleyball

It was one of the busiest weekends that any Tigers team will have to face this year as the women’s volleyball team played five games in just three days. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ and Saint Mary’s were the hosts of the second AUS-RSEQ Interlock over the past weekend that featured 10 teams.

After dropping their opening two matches on Friday night, the Tigers rallied back to salvage the weekend winning their final three.

On Friday the Tigers fell to McGill in the afternoon 3-1 and to Sherbrooke in the evening 3-2. In their opening match against McGill the ladies had set point and a chance to force a fifth set but could not close out the opportunity.

That evening the Tigers lost a five-set thriller to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in a match where the Tigers seemed to lay off when they had substantial leads.

Anna Dunn-Suen was the Tigers best player recording 30 kills in the two contests.

Saturday was a different story for AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ who beat two quality opponents in the Laval Rouge et Or and the Montreal Carabins.

First up was Laval who took the Tigers to a fifth and final set, but AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ managed to jump to an early lead in the set and hold on.

Later on in the evening the Tigers took on the fourth-ranked team in the nation the Montreal Carabins. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ came through in the clutch winning the opening two sets by two points en route to a 3-1 win.

Marisa Mota put on a defensive clinic with 46 digs on the day.

The Tigers wrapped up the event with their easiest match of the weekend against UQAM. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ rarely trailed in their 3-0 defeat over UQAM.

It was Mieke DuMont who took the reigns offensively with a game high 13 kills.

The Tigers are done for 2015 and won’t return to the court until January 15 when they play UNB at the Dalplex.

Women’s Hockey

The women’s hockey team was only in action once this weekend on Sunday night against the Moncton Aigles Bleues. The Tigers fell 4-3 after Amelie Dion scored a late power play goal in the third period, breaking the deadlock.

AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ was able to get the all-important first goal as Lisa MacLean scored on the power play just under five minutes into the game. The two sides would trade goals back and forth until the end of the first period.

After 20 minutes of play the game was tied at 2-2.

Moncton netted a goal on the power play eight minutes into the second period giving them a 3-2 lead. AV¾ãÀÖ²¿ countered quickly as Tara Morning tied things up soon after.

The game was tied for just under 20 minutes of play before Dion scored the game winning goal for Moncton in the third period.

Mati Barrett had 21 saves in the game.

The Tigers next home games come next Sunday when they host StFX.
