Last Tuesday, AV整氈窒 hosted China Day a celebration of Chinese language, history and culture that highlighted the university's many connections with the country. The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Dal's Chinese Studies program, a minor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
Among the attendees were Ms. YANG Xinyi, minister counselor of education for the Embassay of the People's Republic of China to Canada. She led a discussion about funding opportunities for study/research in China and also introduced a panel about academic and research initiatives with the country. On that panel were Dal professors Nancy Pitts (Analytic Food Chemistry, Faculty of Agriculture), Barry Lesser (director of China Programs in Economics and Science), Shannon Brownlee (Film Studies), Yonggan Zhao (Rowe School of Business) and Jinyu Sheng (Department of Oceanography).
Among the other activities for China Day were: a presentation from the Chinese Education Promotion Association of Nova Scotia of its first scholarships for Chinese Studies students; a calligraphy demonstration by master calligrapher Dr. Lei Jiang; live music and dance from the Nova Scotia Chinese Culture and Art Club; and a selection of short animated film screenings.
