MANAGING ANXIETY GROUP
Kathrine Lincoln, M.Sc. R.Psych.

The Managing Anxiety Group is for students who would like to understand and manage their anxiety.泭 Some of the topics to be covered are:
understanding symptoms of anxiety, managing physical discomfort, panic, anxious/worrisome thoughts and associated behaviors.

Treatment approaches include: cognitive-behavioral strategies, relaxation training, and mindfulness.

A session is devoted to yoga for anxiety (Caelin Nadin, Yoga Instructor)

The group will meet Thursdays from 10:30am 12:00 noon, starting January 30th, February 6, 13, and 27th in the Counselling Services Centre

MINDFULNESS GROUP

The Mindfulness Group is for students who would like to learn and practice being aware, present, attentive and focused.泭 Mindfulness practice
泭involves paying attention on purpose with compassion, non-judgmentally, fostering kindness and compassion toward self and others. (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 2004)

Cultivating Mindfulness by learning how to pay attention to present experiences can directly improve the functioning of the body and brain,
subjective mental life with its feelings thoughts, and interpersonal relationships. (Siegal, 2007)

Aspergers/Autism Spectrum Support and Intervention Group

Drs. Shannon Johnson and Melissa McGonnell will facilitate a group for university students who have a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome/Disorder or
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), February - March, 2014 (dates and times TBD).
The goal of the group is to help people with ASD adjust to and cope with the social and academic challenges often experienced in university.
This group will also provide opportunities to meet other university students with ASD and learn about social and academic resources available at university. 泭
It is open to students of Dal, Kings and NSCAD.泭泭 泭

SLEEP and RELAXATION WORKSHOPS

These two-hour workshops include tips on how to fall asleep faster and 泭
feel more refreshed during the day.泭 Participants will also learn 泭
relaxation techniques, including deep breathing, progressive muscle 泭
relation, and visualization.

Coping with Exam Anxiety

Do you feel so anxious before and during exams that you worry it 泭
stands in the way of doing well?泭 This Workshop is intended for 泭
students who experience disruptive anxiety before and/or during exams, 泭
despite having generally adequate study habits.泭 This Workshop will 泭
focus on identifying and changing worrisome thoughts, gaining 泭
perspective through mindfulness, and calming oneself though breathing.

Open to DAL, Kings, and NSCAD students.

One day workshop:泭泭泭泭泭 Tuesday, April 1st, 2014泭泭泭泭泭泭泭泭 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
(to be held within the Counselling Centre)

EATING DISORDERS泭 DROP-IN GROUP

The Eating Disorders Group is an on-going group which continues until 泭
the end of the academic year.泭 The Group is for students who are 泭
experiencing difficulties with eating in the form of severe 泭
restrictions or anorexia nervosa, binging with or without purging or 泭
bulimia, and compulsive overeating.泭 The focus of the group is to 泭
provide a safe setting, support self-defined change, and resolve 泭
underlying feelings.

Tuesdays: 5:30 - 6:30 pm in the Counselling Services Centre

Living With Loss: A Grief Support Group
Wednesdays, 1:30 - 2:30 pm
DROP IN SESSIONS

This group is appropriate for students who have experienced a 泭
significant loss.泭 Most commonly, that would be the death of a loved 泭
one, but could also include the break-up of a significant relationship 泭
or major loss.泭 The group will involve mainly discussions, with some 泭
individual activities.泭 Various topics will be covered throughout the 泭
year.

This is a drop-in group.泭 Students can attend as many sessions as they need.

We recommend that you call our office (494 2081) each Wednesday to 泭
confirm that the group is taking place.

There are three workshops scheduled.泭 Students can attend one or more, depending on their interests and needs.

泭 self care,泭 relaxation skills, avoiding burnout

3.泭泭泭泭 Keep Your Eyes on the Prize:泭 Maintaining Motivation

-short term and long term goals, rekindling your passion for research and writing, finding meaning in the grad school experience.
