Wallace McCain Learning Commons construction update

Posted by Facilities Management on July 31, 2014 in Facilities Management

Excavation work at the Wallace McCain Learning Commons site started up again this week following a two-week break in activity. The mass removal of rock is now complete and proceeded more quickly than anticipated. The next step of rock breaking and removal involves selective removal of rock for the installation of concrete footings, to tie-in sewer and water lines, re-route a sprinkler line, and remove the concrete landing of the staircase leading up to the common between the Henry Hicks building and the Life Sciences Centre.

Rock breaking work is expected to continue until the end of August, and will only be carried out within times allowed by the HRM noise bylaw.泭 泭

Next week there will be some disruption to traffic at the intersection of Lord AV整氈窒 Drive and Castine Way in order to complete the tie-in of sewer and water lines. Automobile traffic flow to and from the Dunn Parking Lot will be maintained either via Lord AV整氈窒 Drive or Castine Way.

Appropriate signage and traffic control personnel will be present to ensure smooth traffic flows, and this will only be for a few days.

In order to re-route an existing underground sprinkler branch line it will be necessary to shut down the sprinkler system for short durations up to 6 hours from time to time over the coming weeks. The buildings affected by these shutdowns will be Chase, McDonald and Chemistry and appropriate notices will be delivered to building occupants in advance.
