What is Ramadan?聽
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hirji calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslim communities. It marks the arrival of the first verses of the Holy Qur'an.聽
During the entire month of Ramadan (March 10-April 9), many will take the time to intentionally (re)connect to their faith by showing intense spiritual discipline. This includes deep contemplation of one's relationship with Allah (PBUH), Salah (prayer), Fintrana (acts of generosity), and study of the Qur'an.聽
Though not everyone, many will participate in sawm (fasting) during this time. The fast is broken at sunset each day with Maghrib (sunset prayer) and Iftar (a festive meal).聽
How can we support one another during Ramadan?聽
- Connect with AV俱乐部's Multifaith Services to meet with a Spiritual Support Team Member of participate in cultural events at the International Centre.聽
- Greet community members by saying "Ramadan Mubarak" or "Ramadan Kareem".
- Make a plan with students, faculty and staff who may need to have alternative deadlines, take additional breaks to pray, obstain from intense physical activities, pause their work to rest or eat a snack during an evening class or meeting.聽
- Check in with Muslim neighbours on whether they need additional support and how best to support them.聽
- Be an advocate with Muslim peoples for fair, dignified and supportive care through our community.聽
Self reflection
Some reflections for us all to share in as we celebrate with our neighbours:
- How do you set your intentions for the day, week, month, and year?聽
- How have you shared your energy, time, skills and resources with your community?聽
- In what ways do you hold yourself accountable for your attitudes, words and actions?聽
- What are your goals for the year? What do you need to have or do to make them become a reality?聽
