Student Fellows

The Student Fellows Program offers students at the Schulich School of Law an opportunity to become involved with the activities of the Health Law Institute (HLI), and to participate in community-building and networking opportunities in the health law and policy field.

Student Fellows are Invited to:

  • Join Health Law Career Chats with HLI seminar presenters, visiting scholars and health law practitioners.
  • Join Health Law Student Writing Workshops: fellows pursuing health law projects in paper courses will have the opportunity to share and develop their work in a faculty-hosted workshop.
  • Undertake Field-Based Directed Research Projects: fellows will have the opportunity to work with an HLI member on a field-based directed research project based in a current law reform or policy project or with a community partner.
  • Create featured content on the HLI website: fellows will have the opportunity to write blog posts or reviews about health law and policy developments to be featured on our website.
  • Propose Reading or Working Groups: fellows will have the opportunity to meet once a month with an HLI member to read and discuss a new work of scholarship, to explore an emerging subfield of health law, or to discuss a recently released government/commission report, or as a working group, to conduct research and assist in public interest advocacy in the health law and policy field.

Student Fellows will also receive regular updates about upcoming HLI seminars and other health law and policy events, auctioned tickets for community or networking events, and opportunities to assist on HLI research projects.

Apply to be a Fellow:

All J.D. and LL.M. students are eligible for the Program. To apply, please send a brief letter of interest, and a current c.v./resume to HLI Director, Professor Matthew Herder (matthew.herder@dal.ca).

Student Fellows are expected to enrol in the HLI distribution list, attend HLI events, and participate in program activities. Once fellows, students remain fellows until graduation provided they fulfill these program expectations.Â
