Roger Thompson is a fellow of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society and a research fellow of the Centre for the Study of Security and Development at AV整氈窒. He has published two books about the U.S. Navy, the first of which was based on his AV整氈窒 MA thesis. That monograph, Brown Shoes, Black Shoes, And Felt Slippers: Parochialism and the Evolution of the Post-War U.S. Navy, was published by the U.S. Naval War College and became required reading for students in a graduate-level course at MIT in 2005.

Additionally, he has published in many journals including The Defense Monitor, CounterPunch, RealClearDefense, Canadas Navy Annual, Airforce, Esprit de Corps, and Canadian Defence Review. His most successful work to date has been Facing the hard facts about the world class US Navy which appeared in Responsible Statecraft in September 2022, and generated a record-breaking 125,000+ views, giving the journal its greatest exposure ever.

From 2006 to 2024, he was a faculty member at Kyung Hee University in South Korea, teaching a variety of courses, including civic education, and that groundbreaking class focused on the patriotic ideals of President John F. Kennedy and the civil rights activism of Atticus Finch. He also has the distinction of teaching Koreas first Star Trek class, which concentrated on ethics. He has since returned to Canada and is transitioning to an academic advising role.
